8An act relating to correctional probation officers;
9creating s. 943.17001, F.S.; requiring the Department of
10Corrections to provide a standardized firearm and
11ammunition to correctional probation officers; providing
12rulemaking authority of the department; providing an
13appropriation; providing an effective date.

15Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
16
17     Section 1.  Section 943.17001, Florida Statutes, is created
18to read:
19     943.17001  Correctional probation officers; provision of
20standardized firearm and ammunition.--Upon completion of
21training, certification, and approval as a correctional
22probation officer, the Department of Corrections shall provide
23to any correctional probation officer who chooses to carry a
24firearm a standardized semiautomatic firearm as designated by
25department rule, and, for the duration of the correctional
26probation officer's employment, standardized ammunition as
27designated by department rule for the semiautomatic firearm
28issued to the correctional probation officer. If a correctional
29probation officer elects to no longer carry a firearm or is no
30longer employed by the department, he or she must return the
31firearm and any unused ammunition issued by the department. The
32department has the authority to adopt rules pursuant to ss.
33120.536(1) and 120.54 to implement the provisions of this
34section.
35     Section 2.  The sum of $1 million in nonrecurring funds is
36appropriated from the General Revenue Fund to the Department of
37Corrections for the 2006-2007 fiscal year for expenses for the
38purpose of providing a standardized firearm and ammunition to
39correctional probation officers.
40     Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2006.
