A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to correctional probation officers;
3creating s. 943.17001, F.S.; requiring the Department of
4Corrections to provide a standardized firearm and
5ammunition to correctional probation officers; providing
6rulemaking authority of the department; providing an
7appropriation; providing an effective date.

9Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11     Section 1.  Section 943.17001, Florida Statutes, is created
12to read:
13     943.17001  Correctional probation officers; provision of
14standardized firearm and ammunition.--Upon completion of
15training, certification, and approval as a correctional
16probation officer, the Department of Corrections shall provide
17to any correctional probation officer who chooses to carry a
18firearm a standardized semiautomatic firearm as designated by
19department rule, and, for the duration of the correctional
20probation officer's employment, standardized ammunition as
21designated by department rule for the semiautomatic firearm
22issued to the correctional probation officer. If a correctional
23probation officer elects to no longer carry a firearm or is no
24longer employed by the department, he or she must return the
25firearm and any unused ammunition issued by the department. The
26department has the authority to adopt rules pursuant to ss.
27120.536(1) and 120.54 to implement the provisions of this
28section.
29     Section 2.  The sum of $1 million in nonrecurring funds is
30appropriated from the General Revenue Fund to the Department of
31Corrections for the 2006-2007 fiscal year for expenses for the
32purpose of providing a standardized firearm and ammunition to
33correctional probation officers.
34     Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2006.
