  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing Breast Cancer

  3         Awareness Month.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer

  6  diagnosed in women in the nation, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida ranks third in the nation for total

  8  number of new breast cancer cases and deaths from breast

  9  cancer, and

10         WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer and

11  the single most important risk factor is age, such that breast

12  cancers predominantly occur in women age 50 and older, and the

13  risk increases with age until age 80, and

14         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that

15  during 2006 more than 13,360 new cases of invasive breast

16  cancer will be diagnosed in Florida, and approximately 2,570

17  women will die of the disease, and

18         WHEREAS, a woman living in the United States has a one

19  in eight chance of developing breast cancer, and

20         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second most common cause

21  of cancer death in white women and among African American

22  women, and

23         WHEREAS, early detection, through routine clinical

24  examinations and mammography screening beginning at age 40, in

25  compliance with the American Cancer Society's recommended

26  guidelines, are the key to detecting breast cancer at its

27  earliest stages, and

28         WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer, if

29  the disease is found in its earliest stages, is 98 percent,

30  but drops down to 26 percent if the cancer is detected late,

31  in a stage of metastases, and

 1         WHEREAS, in conjunction with the promotion of October

 2  as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer awareness

 3  programs, such as the American Cancer Society's Reach to

 4  Recovery Program, will promote early-breast-cancer detection

 5  through regular screening, NOW, THEREFORE,

 6  

 7  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 8  

 9         That the month of October 2006 is recognized as "Breast

10  Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida and all women are urged to

11  understand the risks associated with breast cancer, to take

12  preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to undergo

13  early-detection procedures such as mammography in compliance

14  with the American Cancer Society's recommended

15  breast-cancer-screening guidelines.
