1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution honoring the dedication and
3 contributions of Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek.

5 WHEREAS, Carrie P. Meek was born on April 29, 1926, the
6 granddaughter of a slave and the daughter of former
7 sharecroppers, and spent her childhood in a then-segregated
8 Tallahassee, and
9 WHEREAS, Carrie Meek graduated from Florida
10 Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1946, a time when
11 African Americans were not permitted to attend graduate school
12 in Florida, and then earned a Master's Degree at the
13 University of Michigan, and
14 WHEREAS, she worked as an educator at Bethune Cookman
15 College in Daytona Beach and at her alma mater, Florida A&M
16 University, moving to Miami to serve as Special Assistant to
17 the Vice President of Miami-Dade Community College, a
18 segregated school at which she played a central role in
19 pressing for integration, and
20 WHEREAS, active in community projects in the Miami
21 area, Carrie Meek was elected as a State Representative in
22 1979 and was the first African-American woman elected to the
23 Florida State Senate in 1982, during which time she served on
24 the Education Appropriations Subcommittee and helped pave the
25 way for the construction of thousands of affordable rental
26 housing units in her district, and
27 WHEREAS, in 1992, Senator Meek was elected to the
28 United States House of Representatives from Florida's 17th
29 Congressional District, an accomplishment that made her the
30 first African-American lawmaker elected to represent Florida
31 in Congress since Reconstruction, and

1 WHEREAS, upon taking office, Congresswoman Meek faced
2 the task of helping her district recover from the devastation
3 wrought by Hurricane Andrew, and her efforts helped to raise
4 $100 million in federal assistance to rebuild Miami-Dade
5 County, NOW, THEREFORE,

7 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
8
9 That the Senate honors Congresswoman Carrie P. Meek for
10 her lifetime of dedication to the residents of the State of
11 Florida and the United States of America, and recognizes her
12 for her many significant contributions, which, throughout the
13 state and the nation, have helped to nurture children,
14 strengthen communities, and improve the democratic process.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
16 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to
17 Congresswoman Meek as a tangible token of the sentiments of
18 the Florida Senate.
