| 5 | A bill to be entitled |
| 6 | An act relating to tuition waivers; amending s. 1009.26, |
| 7 | F.S.; requiring state universities and community colleges |
| 8 | to waive tuition for a recipient of a Purple Heart or |
| 9 | other combat decoration superior in precedence who |
| 10 | fulfills specified criteria; providing a percentage cap on |
| 11 | the number of required credit hours for which a tuition |
| 12 | waiver may be received; providing an effective date. |

| 14 | Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |
| 15 |
|
| 16 | Section 1. Subsection (9) is added to section 1009.26, |
| 17 | Florida Statutes, to read: |
| 18 | 1009.26 Fee waivers.-- |
| 19 | (9) A state university or community college shall waive |
| 20 | undergraduate tuition for each recipient of a Purple Heart or |
| 21 | other combat decoration superior in precedence who: |
| 22 | (a) Is enrolled as a full-time, part-time, or summer- |
| 23 | school student in an undergraduate program that terminates in a |
| 24 | degree or certificate; |
| 25 | (b) Is currently, and was at the time of the military |
| 26 | action that resulted in the awarding of the Purple Heart or |
| 27 | other combat decoration superior in precedence, a resident of |
| 28 | this state; and |
| 29 | (c) Submits to the state university or the community |
| 30 | college the DD-214 form issued at the time of separation from |
| 31 | service as documentation that the student has received a Purple |
| 32 | Heart or other combat decoration superior in precedence. |

| 34 | Such a waiver for a recipient of a Purple Heart or other combat |
| 35 | decoration superior in precedence shall be applicable for 110 |
| 36 | percent of the number of required credit hours of the degree or |
| 37 | certificate program for which the student is enrolled. |
| 38 | Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2006. |
