1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution commending the School District of
3 Hillsborough County on winning the 2005 Urban
4 School Board Excellence Award of the National
5 School Boards Association.

7 WHEREAS, the National School Boards Association is a
8 national federation of state school boards associations
9 representing more than 95,000 school board members who govern
10 the nation's public schools, and
11 WHEREAS, the association's Council of Urban Boards of
12 Education (CUBE) seeks to foster excellence and equity in
13 public elementary and secondary education in urban areas and
14 annually names a school district that best demonstrates
15 excellence in four core areas: board governance, closing the
16 achievement gap, academic achievement, and community
17 engagement, and
18 WHEREAS, the 2005 award has been won by the
19 Hillsborough County School District, the ninth-largest school
20 district in the United States, encompassing Tampa as well as
21 suburban and rural areas and serving 192,000 students among
22 whom more than 70 languages are spoken, and
23 WHEREAS, in making the award, Anne L. Bryant, executive
24 director of the National School Boards Association, said:
25 "Hillsborough County School District has shown terrific
26 leadership by defining its priorities and committing itself to
27 public engagement and, in doing so, finding a winning formula
28 for creating high-performing students at all levels," and
29 WHEREAS, the Hillsborough County School District
30 achieved its success through energetic board leadership,
31 innovative thinking, skillful teacher recruitment, and

1 vigorous outreach programs that involved community members and
2 assisted parents in helping their children to succeed in
3 school, NOW, THEREFORE,

5 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
6
7 That the Hillsborough County School District is
8 commended for its exemplary efforts and success in improving
9 educational opportunity and success for the children of
10 Hillsborough County schools.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
12 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the
13 Hillsborough County School District as a token of the
14 sentiments of the Florida Senate.
