House Resolution
2A resolution designating March 23, 2006, as "FAMU Day" in
3Tallahassee.

5     WHEREAS, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University was
6founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in 1891, and
7designated a university in 1953, and
8     WHEREAS, FAMU, a four-year, historically black university
9offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, seeks
10qualified students from all racial, ethnic, religious, and
11national groups and has provided immeasurable educational
12opportunities for young men and women, and
13     WHEREAS, academic components of the university consist of
1413 colleges and schools and two institutes: Arts and Sciences;
15Education; Engineering Sciences, Technology, and Agriculture;
16Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Engineering; Allied Health
17Sciences; Architecture; Business and Industry; General Studies;
18Journalism and Graphic Communication; Nursing; Law; Graduate
19Studies and Research; the Environmental Sciences Institute; and
20the Institute of Public Health, and
21     WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans with
22baccalaureate degrees and degrees in business management,
23marketing, and related services, and its School of Business and
24Industry's Accounting Team won first place in the 10th Annual
25Deloitte Foundation National Student Case Study Seminar in 2005,
26and
27     WHEREAS, FAMU won the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team
28Championship in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2003, and 2005; its
29radio station, WANM 90.5, was ranked No. 2 by the Princeton
30Review among the nation's college radio stations; and 20 members
31of the "Marching 100" were invited to perform with rapper Kanye
32West and comedian Jamie Foxx at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in
33Los Angeles, NOW, THEREFORE,

35Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
36Florida:

38     That the House of Representatives, in recognition of
39Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University's contributions
40as an outstanding institution of higher education, proudly
41designates March 23, 2006, as "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee.
42     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
43presented to Dr. Castell Vaughn Bryant, interim president of
44Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible
45token of the sentiments expressed herein.
