5 | WHEREAS, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University was |
6 | founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in 1891, and |
7 | designated a university in 1953, and |
8 | WHEREAS, FAMU, a four-year, historically black university |
9 | offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, seeks |
10 | qualified students from all racial, ethnic, religious, and |
11 | national groups and has provided immeasurable educational |
12 | opportunities for young men and women, and |
13 | WHEREAS, academic components of the university consist of |
14 | 13 colleges and schools and two institutes: Arts and Sciences; |
15 | Education; Engineering Sciences, Technology, and Agriculture; |
16 | Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Engineering; Allied Health |
17 | Sciences; Architecture; Business and Industry; General Studies; |
18 | Journalism and Graphic Communication; Nursing; Law; Graduate |
19 | Studies and Research; the Environmental Sciences Institute; and |
20 | the Institute of Public Health, and |
21 | WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans with |
22 | baccalaureate degrees and degrees in business management, |
23 | marketing, and related services, and its School of Business and |
24 | Industry's Accounting Team won first place in the 10th Annual |
25 | Deloitte Foundation National Student Case Study Seminar in 2005, |
26 | and |
27 | WHEREAS, FAMU won the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team |
28 | Championship in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2003, and 2005; its |
29 | radio station, WANM 90.5, was ranked No. 2 by the Princeton |
30 | Review among the nation's college radio stations; and 20 members |
31 | of the "Marching 100" were invited to perform with rapper Kanye |
32 | West and comedian Jamie Foxx at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in |
33 | Los Angeles, NOW, THEREFORE, |

35 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |

38 | That the House of Representatives, in recognition of |
39 | Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University's contributions |
40 | as an outstanding institution of higher education, proudly |
41 | designates March 23, 2006, as "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee. |
42 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
43 | presented to Dr. Castell Vaughn Bryant, interim president of |
44 | Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible |
45 | token of the sentiments expressed herein. |
