House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing Garrett Johnson on his selection
3as a Rhodes Scholar.

5     WHEREAS, Garrett Johnson, an outstanding scholar-athlete at
6Florida State University, has been selected as one of 32 college
7students from throughout the nation and one of fewer than 100
8from around the world to receive a prestigious Rhodes
9Scholarship to Oxford University to begin in the fall of 2006,
10and
11     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson, the top shot putter in FSU history,
12became a two-time NCAA East Region Champion in Shot Put and
13Discus at the 2005 regional meet, was named USTCA Athlete of the
14Week for his performance at the 2005 Florida Intercollegiate
15Championships, placed second at the ACC Indoor Championships,
16earned All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor National
17Championships in March 2005, and in 2006 won the NCAA Indoor
18Shot Put Championship, and
19     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson earned FSU's Golden Torch Award for
20having the highest GPA of any member of the men's track and
21field team, was named the 2005 Arthur Ashe, Jr., Sport Scholar,
22and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Collegiate Honor Society
23and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and
24     WHEREAS, while pursuing his graduate degree in public
25administration, Mr. Johnson simultaneously serves as a
26legislative assistant in the Governor's office, where he is a
27member of several committees, including the Governor's Haiti
28Advisory Council, and has worked as the assistant to the
29director of the Governor's Haiti Advisory Group, and
30     WHEREAS, Garrett Johnson's exceptional accomplishments as a
31scholar-athlete are matched by his energetic dedication to
32public service, and his selection as a Rhodes Scholar brings
33well-deserved recognition to him and great distinction to this
34state, NOW, THEREFORE,

36Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
37Florida:

39     That the House of Representatives applauds and commends the
40excellence of Garrett Johnson's performance as both scholar and
41athlete, praises his worthy efforts on behalf of the legislative
42and governmental process, and congratulates him on his selection
43as a Rhodes Scholar.
44     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
45presented to Garrett Johnson as a tangible token of the
46sentiments expressed herein.
