| 5 | WHEREAS, established February 27, 1843, and named in honor |
| 6 | of Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto, Hernando County, bounded |
| 7 | on the west by the Gulf of Mexico and on the north by the |
| 8 | Chassahowitzka Swamp and the Withlacoochee State Forest, covers |
| 9 | approximately 477 square miles, stretching 37 miles from east to |
| 10 | west and 18 miles from north to south, and |
| 11 | WHEREAS, Hernando County, with a population of only 17,004 |
| 12 | in 1970, was the third-fastest growing county in the nation |
| 13 | during the 1980's, averaging an annual growth of 5,665, and, |
| 14 | although that growth began to ebb during the early part of the |
| 15 | following decade, by the year 2000, the population had risen to |
| 16 | 130,802, with a total of 156,600 projected by 2010, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, for a brief time, the port town of Bayport served |
| 18 | as the county seat, but in 1856, the more centrally located City |
| 19 | of Brooksville was established as the seat of county government, |
| 20 | and today Brooksville and Weeki Wachee are the two cities among |
| 21 | Hernando County's unincorporated areas of Spring Hill, Ridge |
| 22 | Manor, Ridge Manor West, Bayport, Aripeka, Lake Lindsey, and |
| 23 | Hernando Beach, and |
| 24 | WHEREAS, Hernando County's major industries are limestone |
| 25 | mining, cement production, tourism, dairy and citrus products, |
| 26 | cattle production, forest resources, and construction, and its |
| 27 | growing manufacturing association base is centered in industrial |
| 28 | parks in and around the county's state-of-the-art airport, one |
| 29 | of the largest non-urban airfields in Florida, and in industrial |
| 30 | areas in the eastern part of the county, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 32 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 33 | Florida: |

| 35 | That the House of Representatives warmly welcomes the |
| 36 | residents of Hernando County to their State Capital and |
| 37 | designates March 29, 2006, as "Hernando County Day" in |
| 38 | Tallahassee. |
