House Resolution
2A resolution designating March 29, 2006, as "F.S.U. Day"
3in Tallahassee.

5     WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University
6is the oldest continuous site of higher education in Florida and
7holds the state's first chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, which was
8chartered in 1935, and
9     WHEREAS, in 1994, the Florida State University joined an
10elite group of the nation's top research universities when it
11was designated as a "Research I" institution by the Carnegie
12Foundation, and
13     WHEREAS, today, Florida State University offers graduate
14and undergraduate degrees in 304 programs within 17 independent
15colleges and schools, taught by a 1,897-member faculty that has
16included 10 National Academy of Sciences members and 6 Nobel
17Laureates, and
18     WHEREAS, Florida State University houses the National High
19Magnetic Field Laboratory, which uses the world's most powerful
20magnet to conduct research into the frontiers of science and
21engineering technologies for a new century, and
22     WHEREAS, Florida State University has graduated its second
23Rhodes Scholar, Garrett Johnson, who was one of only 32 students
24in the United States to receive this distinguished award, and
25     WHEREAS, the fully accredited Florida State University
26College of Medicine, the first new doctor of medicine program to
27be established in the United States since 1982, recently
28graduated its inaugural class and currently has 223 medical
29students and 5 doctor of philosophy students enrolled, and
30     WHEREAS, the college experience continues to enrich the
31lives of Florida State University students because of the long-
32standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and cultural
33diversity on its campus along with the aggressive recruitment of
34diverse groups of students, NOW, THEREFORE,

36Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
37Florida:

39     That the House of Representatives designates March 29,
402006, as "F.S.U. Day" in Tallahassee in recognition of the
41university's contributions as an outstanding institution of
42higher education.
43     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
44presented to Dr. T. K. Wetherell, President of Florida State
45University, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed
46herein.
