| 2 | A resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of the |
| 3 | University of South Florida and designating April 18, |
| 4 | 2006, as "USF Day" in the State Capitol and throughout the |
| 5 | State of Florida. |

| 7 | WHEREAS, on December 18, 1956, Fowler Avenue property in |
| 8 | Hillsborough County was approved as the site for the new |
| 9 | university created by the Florida Legislature when HB 1007 |
| 10 | became law on June 18, 1955, and |
| 11 | WHEREAS, the University of South Florida, opened as the |
| 12 | first independent state university conceived, planned, and built |
| 13 | in the 20th century, initially admitted 1,667 students and has |
| 14 | since blossomed into a multicampus Research I Metropolitan |
| 15 | Institution with campuses in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota- |
| 16 | Manatee, and Polk Counties, and |
| 17 | WHEREAS, currently serving more than 43,000 students, the |
| 18 | university offers about 7,000 courses leading to 88 |
| 19 | baccalaureate degrees, 87 master's degrees, and 39 doctor of |
| 20 | philosophy degrees and boasts over 181,000 alumni, more than |
| 21 | 90,000 of whom live, work, and volunteer in the Tampa Bay Area, |
| 22 | and |
| 23 | WHEREAS, USF brings the force of a $3.2-billion annual |
| 24 | economic impact to the region it serves, and |
| 25 | WHEREAS, the USF Bulls comprise the Tampa Bay Region's |
| 26 | Division 1-A Home Teams, bringing top-level competition to the |
| 27 | area as members of the Big East Conference, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 29 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 30 | Florida: |

| 32 | That the House of Representatives congratulates the |
| 33 | University of South Florida as it celebrates its 50th |
| 34 | anniversary in 2006 and designates April 18, 2006, as "USF Day" |
| 35 | in the State Capitol and throughout the State of Florida. |
| 36 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
| 37 | presented to Judy Genshaft, Ph.D., President, University of |
| 38 | South Florida, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed |
| 39 | herein. |
