House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the week of June 18-24, 2006, as
3"Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, humane societies have diligently served numerous
6communities in the State of Florida for as many as 45 years, and
7     WHEREAS, there are currently 48 humane societies in Florida
8that serve 40 counties in the struggle against domestic animal
9overpopulation, working to promote animal adoption and
10education, eliminate animal overpopulation, prevent animal
11cruelty, and relieve animal suffering, and
12     WHEREAS, stray animals present a health and safety risk for
13the people and animals of the state, and
14     WHEREAS, an estimated 800,000 or more unwanted and stray
15animals are euthanized annually in Florida, and
16     WHEREAS, through education, adoption, and promotion of
17spay/neuter practices, humane societies are reducing the number
18of companion animals euthanized in this state, and
19     WHEREAS, in 2004, humane societies located permanent homes
20for many thousands of unwanted animals and promoted regional
21spay/neuter campaigns as a preventive and responsible measure
22for controlling the animal overpopulation in Florida, and
23     WHEREAS, humane societies are staffed by an estimated
2410,000 Florida residents who unselfishly volunteer their time,
25energy, and expertise, NOW, THEREFORE,

27Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
28Florida:

30     That the humane societies across this state are commended
31for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the people and
32animals of Florida.
33     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that that the week of June 18-24,
342006, is recognized as "Humane Society Appreciation Week" in
35Florida.
