| 5 | WHEREAS, in 1934, the United States Congress passed the |
| 6 | Philippine Independence Act, which created the Commonwealth Army |
| 7 | of the Philippines, required all citizens of the Philippines to |
| 8 | pledge allegiance to the United States until their independence, |
| 9 | and authorized the President of the United States to place the |
| 10 | Commonwealth Army under the command of the United States Army, |
| 11 | and |
| 12 | WHEREAS, on July 26, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt |
| 13 | placed the Commonwealth Army of the Philippines under the |
| 14 | command of General Douglas MacArthur, thereby forming the United |
| 15 | States Army Forces in the Far East, and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, an estimated 200,000 Filipinos from the |
| 17 | Commonwealth Army, Philippine Scouts, and other anti-Japanese |
| 18 | guerrilla units served with surpassing honor and sacrifice in |
| 19 | the United States Armed Forces fighting against the Japanese |
| 20 | alongside their American comrades and dying with them to |
| 21 | liberate their nation and guarantee a United States victory in |
| 22 | the Philippines, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 24 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 25 | Florida: |

| 27 | That the House of Representatives wishes to recognize, |
| 28 | honor, and thank the Filipino veterans of the United States |
| 29 | Armed Forces of World War II, both living and dead, for the |
| 30 | sacrifices they made in defense of freedom in that war. |
