House Resolution
2A resolution honoring the memory of Charles Sampson Bing,
3Sr.
4
5     WHEREAS, Charles Sampson Bing, Sr., associate director of
6bands for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University at the
7time of his death on June 26, 2005, joined the faculty of the
8university's music department in 1960 and thereafter devoted his
9outstanding musical and teaching talents to the institution, and
10     WHEREAS, Charles Bing received a bachelor's degree in music
11education from FAMU, earned a master's degree in music education
12from Indiana University, and did further study at the University
13of Illinois, all the while garnering honors such as the
14"Outstanding Bandsman Award," which he received in each of his
15sophomore, junior, and senior years as an undergraduate student
16at FAMU, and
17     WHEREAS, affectionately referred to as "Prof. Bing" by both
18students and faculty of the university, Charles Bing was known
19for his exceptional musical ability, his attention to detail,
20and his insistence on perfection, both musically and
21academically; respected for his dignity, humility, and
22extraordinary work ethic; and loved for his compassionate
23interest in those with whom he came in contact, and
24     WHEREAS, Professor Bing served in numerous capacities
25during his tenure at the university, but he was most noted for
26directing the Marching and Symphonic Bands and the ROTC and
27University Pop Bands and was unsurpassed in his skills in
28formulating, and demanding perfection in the rendition of, the
29Marching 100's precise formations, and
30     WHEREAS, Charles Bing, during his distinguished career, was
31the recipient of countless awards; was named FAMU Teacher of the
32Year in 1993; and was one of the first recipients of the State
33of Florida Teacher Incentive Program Award; but by far his most
34cherished honor was the Charles S. Bing Scholarship for
35Outstanding Musicianship established at FAMU in 2004, and
36     WHEREAS, although proudly claimed by FAMU as its very own,
37Professor Bing belonged to the music world of the entire
38southern United States, where he served as a guest conductor on
39numerous occasions, as adjudicator and clinician for many
40competitions, and as guest trombonist and consultant throughout
41the area, NOW, THEREFORE,

43Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
44Florida:

46     That the late Charles Sampson Bing, Sr., Florida
47Agricultural and Mechanical University's associate director of
48bands and beloved "Prof. Bing," is hereby honored and remembered
49with genuine warmth and utmost pride and respect.
50     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
51presented to Mrs. Betty Bing, widow of the late Charles S. Bing,
52Sr., as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
