5 | WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature created the Alzheimer's |
6 | Disease Initiative in 1985 to help families dealing with |
7 | Alzheimer's and related memory disorders by providing links |
8 | connecting policy, research, and practice, and the initiative, |
9 | celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has grown into a |
10 | statewide network that includes fifteen regional memory disorder |
11 | clinics conducting research and training in diagnostic and |
12 | therapeutic settings, and |
13 | WHEREAS, there are 435,000 cases of probable Alzheimer's |
14 | disease in this state, and it is estimated that more than |
15 | 100,000 Floridians have received services from Alzheimer's |
16 | Disease Initiative programs within the last 10 years alone, and |
17 | WHEREAS, Alzheimer's respite care programs are operating in |
18 | all of the state's 67 counties; four model day care programs |
19 | have been established in conjunction with memory disorder |
20 | clinics to test therapeutic interventions for people living with |
21 | memory disorders and to provide training for health care and |
22 | social service personnel; and the Alzheimer's Disease Brain |
23 | Bank, a service and research oriented network, is involved in a |
24 | variety of research activities, and |
25 | WHEREAS, the Alzheimer's Disease Advisory Committee has |
26 | taken a leadership role in developing policy recommendations and |
27 | best practice models to help educate Florida's elders, |
28 | caregivers, and health care professionals about critical issues |
29 | affecting people with memory disorders, including an ethics- |
30 | based policy on driver safety and progressive dementia, a |
31 | protocol for dealing with behavioral challenges and catastrophic |
32 | events affecting persons with dementia who are living in nursing |
33 | homes, and recommendations for specialized care needs for |
34 | persons with Alzheimer's and related memory disorders and their |
35 | caregivers who are affected by natural disasters, and |
36 | WHEREAS, the only program of its kind in the nation when it |
37 | was established in 1985, the Alzheimer's Disease Initiative |
38 | continues to maintain that distinction today, NOW, THEREFORE, |

40 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |

43 | That the House of Representatives recognizes the week of |
44 | April 16-22, 2006, as "Alzheimer's Disease Initiative Week" in |
45 | Florida. |
