House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the month of September 2006 as
3"Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer
6diagnosed among men in Florida, and the state ranks second
7highest in the United States in the number of such cases and
8resultant deaths, and
9     WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that during
10the year 2006 more than 18,090 new cases of prostate cancer will
11be diagnosed in Florida and more than 2,110 men will die from
12the disease, and
13     WHEREAS, African-American and black men have the highest
14incidence of prostate cancer death in the nation, a mortality
15rate that is twice that of Caucasian men, and
16     WHEREAS, the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer
17patients is nearly 100 percent if the disease is diagnosed at
18the local and regional stages, otherwise known as the early
19stages, and the American Cancer Society recommends annual
20testing beginning at age 45 for high-risk men, such as African
21Americans and men with a family history of the disease, with
22recommended annual screening for men at less risk to start at
23age 50, and
24     WHEREAS, each year, the American Cancer Society supports
25African-American Men's Health Summits in at least 16 major
26metropolitan areas across the state in an attempt to increase
27prostate cancer awareness, education, and support and to
28encourage prostate screening among African-American men in
29Florida, NOW, THEREFORE,

31Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
32Florida:

34     That the House of Representatives recognizes the month of
35September 2006 as "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida
36and urges all men to avail themselves of a better understanding
37of the risks associated with prostate cancer, to take preventive
38measures to minimize those risks, and to talk with their doctors
39about annual prostate cancer screening as recommended by the
40American Cancer Society prostate cancer screening guidelines.
