A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to public school educator certification;
3creating s. 1012.587, F.S.; specifying inservice
4requirements for educators who provide English for
5Speakers of Other Languages instruction; providing an
6effective date.

8Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10     Section 1.  Section 1012.587, Florida Statutes, is created
11to read:
12     1012.587  Inservice requirements for English for Speakers
13of Other Languages (ESOL) educators.--To ensure the most
14conducive learning environment and the use of appropriate
15teaching strategies for students with limited English
16proficiency, inservice requirements for educators who provide
17English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) instruction shall
18be as follows:
19     (1)  For a primary English instructor who is an
20English/language arts teacher, 300 inservice hours or the
21equivalent.
22     (2)  For an instructor teaching the core curriculum
23subjects of reading, intensive reading, mathematics, science,
24social studies, or computer literacy, 60 inservice hours or the
25equivalent.
26     (3)  For an instructor teaching noncore curriculum
27subjects, 18 inservice hours or the equivalent.
28     (4)  For a school administrator or guidance counselor, 60
29inservice hours or the equivalent.
30     Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.
