| 8 | Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: |
| 9 |
|
| 10 | Section 1. Section 1012.587, Florida Statutes, is created |
| 11 | to read: |
| 12 | 1012.587 Educator certification in English for Speakers of |
| 13 | Other Languages.-- |
| 14 | (1) The Department of Education or a school district may |
| 15 | not require an educator with certification or endorsement in |
| 16 | reading or intensive reading to earn more than 60 inservice |
| 17 | hours for endorsement in English for Speakers of Other Languages |
| 18 | after credit is applied for duplicative competencies from |
| 19 | certification or endorsement in reading or intensive reading. |
| 20 | (2) The Department of Education or a school district, when |
| 21 | requiring an educator to obtain certification or endorsement in |
| 22 | English for Speakers of Other Languages upon assignment of a |
| 23 | limited English proficient student to the educator, may not |
| 24 | require the educator to begin meeting the certification or |
| 25 | endorsement requirements sooner than 45 school days or one |
| 26 | grading period after the student's assignment, whichever comes |
| 27 | first. |
| 28 | Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2007. |
