11  The Committee on Education Pre-K - 12 (Wise) recommended the
12  following amendment:

14         Senate Amendment 
15         On page 1, lines 22 - 25, delete those lines
16  
17  and insert:  school year, the opening date for schools in the
18  district may not be earlier than 14 days before Labor Day each
19  year. However, a district school board may establish an
20  earlier opening date if the school board meets the following
21  requirements: 
22         1.  Holds at least three public hearings geographically
23  located throughout the school district;
24         2.  Surveys the parents of all enrolled students; and 
25         3.  Approves the earlier opening date by a
26  supermajority vote.

28  A school that operates on a year-round or an extended calendar
29  shall open and close pursuant to district school board policy
30  and may have an opening date that is earlier than 14 days
31  before Labor Day.
