1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to public K-12 educational
3 instruction; amending s. 1003.42, F.S.;
4 requiring school districts to communicate with
5 parents and others concerning the school
6 curriculum related to the teaching of human
7 sexuality to secondary school students;
8 requiring that the information describe the
9 available procedures that parents may use to
10 review the curriculum and the methods by which
11 the parents may provide comments and offer
12 input to the school district; providing an
13 effective date.

15 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

17 Section 1. Subsection (4) is added to section 1003.42,
18 Florida Statutes, to read:
19 1003.42 Required instruction.--
20 (4) Each school district shall notify the parents and
21 the local community, using the district website or other
22 commonly used method of communication, of the instructional
23 standards or course descriptions used by the secondary schools
24 in the school district to teach human sexuality and pregnancy
25 and disease awareness and prevention. The website or other
26 method of communication must include information concerning
27 the available procedures that parents may use to review the
28 curriculum and the methods by which they may provide comments
29 and offer input to the school district.
30 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.

COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR

4 The committee substitute does the following:
5 Requires each school district to notify parents and the
community of instruction provided to secondary students for
6 human sexuality and disease and pregnancy prevention;
7 Requires that the curriculum information be provided using the
district's website or the most commonly-used method of
8 communication. The communication must include procedures
available to parents and the community for the review of the
9 curriculum and methods for providing input and comments; and
10 Removes provisions relating to the notice requirements and
provisions regarding a separate mailing for that purpose.
