House Memorial
2A memorial to the United States Government and the
3Congress of the United States, requesting the United
4States Government to expeditiously amend federal
5immigration policies to grant "Credible Fear Interviews"
6and Temporary Protected Status to Haitians, requesting the
7United States Government to move expeditiously in
8implementing such changes, and urging Congress to amend
9current federal immigration laws to grant Temporary
10Protective Status to Haitians on the same terms as other
11persons fleeing their home county because of political,
12religious, and other recognized persecution.

14     WHEREAS, the United States of America is known worldwide as
15the land of the free and the home of the brave, and
16     WHEREAS, thousands of individuals flee civil unrest and
17political persecution in their home countries in search of basic
18freedoms, and
19     WHEREAS, individuals come to the United States of America
20searching for a safe haven from their home countries where they
21fear persecution, and
22     WHEREAS, under the current federal policy, political
23refugees who reach the United States are granted "Credible Fear
24Interviews," and
25     WHEREAS, the current federal immigration laws provide
26Temporary Protective Status for some persons, and
27     WHEREAS, the Department of Homeland Security is also
28authorized to grant such status under certain circumstances,
29NOW, THEREFORE,

31Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
32
33     That the United States Government is requested to
34expeditiously amend current federal immigration policies, by
35change of law if necessary, to allow Haitians fleeing their home
36country because of political, religious, and other recognized
37persecution and who have reached the United States soil to be
38granted "Credible Fear Interviews" and to be granted Temporary
39Protective Status.
40     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the United States Government is
41requested to act expeditiously to grant Temporary Protective
42Status to Haitians in our country who have fled their home
43country because of political, religious, and other recognized
44persecution.
45     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Congress of the United
46States is urged to amend federal immigration laws to grant
47Temporary Protective Status to Haitians, on the same terms as
48other persons fleeing their home country because of political,
49religious, and other recognized persecution.
50     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
51dispatched to the President of the United States, to the
52President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the
53United States House of Representatives, and to each member of
54the Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
