  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the homestead exemption for

  3         persons certified as totally and permanently

  4         disabled; amending s. 196.101, F.S.;

  5         authorizing a licensed optometrist to certify

  6         that a person is totally and permanently

  7         disabled solely as a result of legal blindness

  8         and therefore entitled to the exemption;

  9         providing an effective date.

11  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13         Section 1.  Subsection (6) is added to section 196.101,

14  Florida Statutes, to read:

15         196.101  Exemption for totally and permanently disabled

16  persons.--

17         (6)  An optometrist licensed under chapter 463 may

18  certify a person to be totally and permanently disabled solely

19  as a result of legal blindness by issuing a certification in

20  accordance with subsection (5). Certification by a doctor and

21  an optometrist of total and permanent disability due to

22  blindness may be deemed to meet the requirements of subsection

23  (3).

24         Section 2.  This act shall take effect January 1, 2008.

28    Authorizes a licensed optometrist to certify a person as
      totally and permanently disabled solely due to legal
29    blindness for purposes of claiming an exemption from ad
      valorem taxes.
