1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to firefighters; amending s.
3 633.382, F.S.; specifying qualifications for
4 and amount of supplemental compensation for a
5 firefighter receiving a master's degree;
6 providing an effective date.

8 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10 Section 1. Subsections (2) and (3) of section 633.382,
11 Florida Statutes, are amended to read:
12 633.382 Firefighters; supplemental compensation.--
13 (2) QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUPPLEMENTAL COMPENSATION.--
14 (a) In addition to the compensation now paid by an
15 employing agency to any firefighter, every firefighter shall
16 be paid supplemental compensation by the employing agency when
17 such firefighter has complied with one of the following
18 criteria:
19 1. Any firefighter who receives an associate degree
20 from a college, which degree is applicable to fire department
21 duties, as outlined in policy guidelines of the division,
22 shall be additionally compensated as outlined in paragraph
23 (3)(a).
24 2. Any firefighter, regardless of whether or not she
25 or he earned an associate degree earlier, who receives from an
26 accredited college or university a bachelor's degree, which
27 bachelor's degree is applicable to fire department duties, as
28 outlined in policy guidelines of the division, shall receive
29 compensation as outlined in paragraph (3)(b).
30 3. Any firefighter, regardless of whether or not she
31 or he earned a bachelor's degree earlier, who receives from an

1 accredited college or university a master's degree, which
2 master's degree is applicable to fire department duties, as
3 outlined in policy guidelines of the division, shall receive
4 compensation as outlined in paragraph (3)(c).
5 (b) Whenever any question arises as to the eligibility
6 of any firefighter to receive supplemental compensation as
7 provided in this section, the question, together with all
8 facts relating thereto, shall be submitted to the division for
9 determination, and the decision of the division with regard to
10 determination of eligibility shall be final, subject to the
11 provisions of chapter 120.
12 (3) SUPPLEMENTAL COMPENSATION.--Supplemental
13 compensation shall be determined as follows:
14 (a) Fifty dollars shall be paid monthly to each
15 firefighter who qualifies under the provisions of subparagraph
16 (2)(a)1.
17 (b) One hundred and ten dollars shall be paid monthly
18 to each firefighter who qualifies under the provisions of
19 subparagraph (2)(a)2.
20 (c) Three hundred dollars shall be paid monthly to
21 each firefighter who qualifies under subparagraph (2)(a)3.
22 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.
