1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing April 11, 2007, as
3 "Hillsborough County Day."

5 WHEREAS, Hillsborough County was once home to native
6 peoples called the Tocogaga Indians who were followed by
7 Spanish conquistadors, the English who held the area as part
8 of its empire, the Seminole Indians, runaway slaves, settlers
9 seeking farmland, and, ultimately, those today embarking on
10 careers in business and industry, and
11 WHEREAS, Hillsborough County's "pioneer" era was
12 roughly bracketed by Florida becoming a United States
13 Territory in 1821 and the arrival of Henry B. Plant's railroad
14 in 1884, the era ending when the railroad connected Tampa to
15 the outside world, and
16 WHEREAS, Hillsborough County was created by the Florida
17 Legislature in 1834 and covered an area of approximately
18 14,600 square miles - all or part of 24 present-day counties
19 in an area larger than eight states at that time, and
20 WHEREAS, the discovery of phosphate and the development
21 of the shipping and cigar industries brought immigrants from
22 Cuba, Italy, Spain, Puerto Rico, and other areas around the
23 world, and mechanization and industrialization rapidly
24 followed, and
25 WHEREAS, Hillsborough County now consists of 1,050
26 square miles with a population density of about 1,177 people
27 per square mile. The county has the 8th largest public school
28 district in the nation with 84.1 percent of its residents over
29 the age of 25 holding high school diplomas and 27 percent
30 holding a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and offers excellent
31 postsecondary educational opportunities and other unmatched

1 amenities conducive to making Hillsborough County an
2 outstanding place to work productively and to raise a family
3 safely, NOW, THEREFORE,

5 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
6
7 That April 11, 2007, is recognized as "Hillsborough
8 County Day" as the Senate celebrates "Flavors of Hillsborough"
9 at the State Capitol.
