1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing April 2007 as
3 "Cancer-Control Awareness Month" in this state
4 and urging all residents of this state to take
5 actions that will decrease their cancer risks.

7 WHEREAS, cancer will strike approximately one out of
8 two men and about one out of every three women in the course
9 of their lives, and
10 WHEREAS, cancer accounts for one out every four deaths,
11 and is the second leading cause of death in the United States,
12 and
13 WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that
14 more than 106,560 new cases of cancer in Florida will be
15 diagnosed and more than 40,430 Floridians will die from cancer
16 in 2007, and
17 WHEREAS, many cancers can be prevented by lifestyle
18 changes, or cured if detected early and treated promptly, and
19 WHEREAS, as many as one-third of the cancer deaths
20 occurring each year will have been related to nutrition,
21 physical inactivity, obesity, and other lifestyle factors, and
22 thus, might have been prevented, and
23 WHEREAS, almost half of all individuals that continue
24 to smoke may expect to die prematurely from lung cancer or
25 other tobacco-related diseases, and
26 WHEREAS, 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent
27 of all lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking cigarettes or
28 other tobacco products, and
29 WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for all cancers
30 combined is 66 percent, but survival rates may increase
31 significantly for certain cancers such as breast, cervical,

1 and colorectal cancers when they are detected and treated
2 early, and
3 WHEREAS, rates of cancer incidence and death in Florida
4 may be significantly reduced with increased awareness of, and
5 compliance with, the American Cancer Society's
6 cancer-screening guidelines, and
7 WHEREAS, promotion of Cancer-Control Awareness Month
8 and state-wide cancer-control initiatives, such as the Florida
9 Dialogue on Cancer sponsored by the American Cancer Society,
10 may assist Florida in significantly reducing the burden of
11 cancer which Floridians and the state face, NOW, THEREFORE,
12
13 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
14
15 That April 2007 is recognized as "Cancer-Control
16 Awareness Month," and all residents of this state are
17 encouraged to understand the risks associated with cancer, to
18 change behaviors that increase their cancer risks, and to
19 follow the American Cancer Society's cancer-screening
20 guidelines.
