  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing March 7, 2007, as

  3         "Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse Centennial Day."

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse has played a

  6  significant economic and historic role in the settlement and

  7  development of South Florida and its counties for 100 years,

  8  and

  9         WHEREAS, the lighthouse has stood through fierce

10  hurricanes, protecting coastal shipping and guiding mariners

11  past dangerous reefs long before the advent of sonar, LORAN,

12  or GPS, and

13         WHEREAS, the lighthouse is now a tourist attraction

14  where thousands of curious visitors, divers, fishers, and

15  boaters come to photograph and explore the inlet, ocean, and

16  reefs each year, and

17         WHEREAS, the lantern of the Hillsboro Lighthouse was

18  first lit by the United States Lighthouse Establishment on

19  March 7, 1907, and

20         WHEREAS, the "Big Diamond" shines farther out to sea

21  than any other lighthouse in the world through its 9-foot

22  Fresnel Lens, and

23         WHEREAS, this lighthouse represents the romantic spirit

24  and sense of adventure of Floridians, and was chosen to

25  represent the 30 existing lighthouses of Florida on the

26  37-cent postage stamp produced in 2003, and

27         WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the State of

28  Florida to preserve, protect, and promote this 100-year-old

29  treasure of our coastline, the historic Hillsboro Inlet

30  Lighthouse Station, NOW, THEREFORE,

 3         That the Senate recognizes March 7, 2007, as "Hillsboro
