  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr.,

  3         Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute;

  4         amending s. 1004.445, F.S.; providing term

  5         limits for certain members of the board of

  6         directors; providing for staggered terms for

  7         certain members of the board of directors;

  8         providing an effective date.

10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11  

12         Section 1.  Paragraph (b) of subsection (2) of section

13  1004.445, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:

14         1004.445  Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr., Alzheimer's Center and

15  Research Institute.--

17         (b)  The affairs of the not-for-profit corporation

18  shall be managed by a board of directors who shall serve

19  without compensation. The board of directors shall consist of

20  the President of the University of South Florida and the chair

21  of the State Board of Education, or their designees, five

22  representatives of the state universities, and nine

23  representatives of the public who are neither medical doctors

24  nor state employees. For the purpose of staggering terms for

25  reappointment, five of the nine representatives of the public

26  shall be appointed to terms of 1 year each, and four shall be

27  appointed to terms of 2 years. Each director who is a

28  representative of a state university or of the public shall be

29  appointed to serve a term of 3 years. A director may not serve

30  more than two consecutive terms, except for the President of

31  the University of South Florida and the chair of the State

 1  Board of Education, or their designees. The chair of the board

 2  of directors shall be selected by a majority vote of the

 3  directors. Each director shall have only one vote. Of the five

 4  university representatives, one shall be appointed by the

 5  Governor, two by the President of the Senate, and two by the

 6  Speaker of the House of Representatives; and of the nine

 7  public representatives, three shall be appointed by the

 8  Governor, three by the President of the Senate, and three by

 9  the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Any vacancy in

10  office shall be filled in the same manner as the original

11  appointment. Any director may be reappointed.

12         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.
