  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the general requirements for

  3         high school graduation; amending s. 1003.43,

  4         F.S.; providing that the completion of a course

  5         in electricity, as specified, counts as one

  6         substitutional credit in science which has a

  7         laboratory component; providing an effective

  8         date.

10  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11  

12         Section 1.  Paragraph (c) of subsection (1) of section

13  1003.43, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:

14         1003.43  General requirements for high school

15  graduation.--

16         (1)  Graduation requires successful completion of

17  either a minimum of 24 academic credits in grades 9 through 12

18  or an International Baccalaureate curriculum. The 24 credits

19  shall be distributed as follows:

20         (c)  Three credits in science, two of which must have a

21  laboratory component. Agriscience Foundations I, the core

22  course in secondary Agriscience and Natural Resources

23  programs, counts as one of the science credits. Electricity

24  1-3, consisting of student performance standards number

25  8727210, 8727220, and 8727230, which are the core sequence

26  courses in the secondary electrical program, counts as one

27  substitutional science credit having a laboratory component

28  for a student in grades 11 through 12.

30  District school boards may award a maximum of one-half credit

31  in social studies and one-half elective credit for student

 1  completion of nonpaid voluntary community or school service

 2  work.  Students choosing this option must complete a minimum

 3  of 75 hours of service in order to earn the one-half credit in

 4  either category of instruction.  Credit may not be earned for

 5  service provided as a result of court action.  District school

 6  boards that approve the award of credit for student volunteer

 7  service shall develop guidelines regarding the award of the

 8  credit, and school principals are responsible for approving

 9  specific volunteer activities. A course designated in the

10  Course Code Directory as grade 9 through grade 12 that is

11  taken below the 9th grade may be used to satisfy high school

12  graduation requirements or Florida Academic Scholars award

13  requirements as specified in a district school board's student

14  progression plan. A student shall be granted credit toward

15  meeting the requirements of this subsection for equivalent

16  courses, as identified pursuant to s. 1007.271(6), taken

17  through dual enrollment.

18         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.

22    Provides that the completion of a course in electricity,
      as specified, satisfies a requirement for high school
23    graduation by counting as one substitutional credit in
      science which has a laboratory component.
