  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing April 18, 2007, as

  3         "Miami MetroZoo Day" in Tallahassee.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, each year nearly 500,000 people visit Miami

  6  MetroZoo and about 80,000 school children benefit from the

  7  educational programs of Miami MetroZoo, and

  8         WHEREAS, the Zoological Society of Florida has

  9  supported Miami MetroZoo and its predecessor, the Crandon Park

10  Zoo, since 1956, helping with relocation and redesign after

11  the zoo was flooded by Hurricane Betsy in 1965, and

12         WHEREAS, Miami MetroZoo and the Zoological Society of

13  Florida have been working together since 1998 in a formal

14  partnership in meeting educational, conservational, and

15  recreational goals, and

16         WHEREAS, Miami MetroZoo was rated one of America's top

17  ten zoos by Travel and Leisure Magazine, and

18         WHEREAS, Miami MetroZoo houses more than 1,200 wild

19  animals in a cageless setting that closely approximates the

20  animals' natural habitats and gives the visitor the feeling of

21  embarking on an international safari, and

22         WHEREAS, more than 200 volunteers contribute 30,000

23  hours of service to Miami MetroZoo every year, including

24  acting as exhibit interpreters and providing guided tours at

25  the zoo and conducting educational programs in the community,

26  which services are worth $315,000 annually, and

27         WHEREAS, the Miami MetroZoo participates in

28  species-survival plans for 47 species which, by providing for

29  long-term breeding and conservation, help avoid the extinction

30  of endangered species such as the Bengal Tiger, the Indian

 1  Rhinoceros, the Andean Condor, the Asian Small-Clawed Otter,

 2  and other endangered species, and

 3         WHEREAS, Miami MetroZoo's breeding programs have

 4  received widespread recognition and a variety of prestigious

 5  awards, ranging from several First Captive Breeding

 6  Certificates to the Edward H. Bean Award, the zoological

 7  profession's highest honor, NOW, THEREFORE,

 8  

 9  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

10  

11         That the Senate recognizes April 18, 2007, as "Miami

12  MetroZoo Day" in Tallahassee in recognition of the outstanding

13  work of Miami MetroZoo, in partnership with the Zoological

14  Society of Florida, as the Legislature concurrently celebrates

15  "Dade Days" at the State Capital.

16         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

17  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the Miami

18  MetroZoo as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida

19  Senate.
