1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing March 22, 2007, as
3 "FSU Day."

5 WHEREAS, the Tallahassee campus of Florida State
6 University is the oldest continuous site of higher education
7 in Florida, and was the site of the state's first chapter of
8 Phi Beta Kappa, chartered in 1935, and
9 WHEREAS, in 1994, the Florida State University joined
10 an elite group of the nation's top research universities,
11 being designated a "Research I" institution by the Carnegie
12 Foundation, and
13 WHEREAS, today Florida State University offers graduate
14 and undergraduate degrees in 304 programs within 17
15 independent colleges and schools, taught by a faculty of 2,291
16 members, which has included 12 National Academy of Sciences
17 members and 6 Nobel Laureates, and
18 WHEREAS, the Florida State University houses the
19 National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, which uses the
20 world's most powerful magnet to conduct research into the
21 frontiers of science and engineering technologies for a new
22 century, and
23 WHEREAS, Florida State University is home to the
24 winningest coach in college football, Bobby Bowden; head
25 baseball coach, Mike Martin; and the winner of the Heisman
26 Trophy, Charlie Ward, who were recently honored with induction
27 into national halls of fame, and
28 WHEREAS, Florida State University has an expanding
29 presence statewide with the opening of two regional campuses
30 of its College of Medicine in Daytona Beach and Fort Pierce,
31 in addition to campuses that the university maintains in

1 Panama City and in Sarasota with the Ringling Center for the
2 Cultural Arts, and
3 WHEREAS, the college experience at Florida State
4 University continues to enrich the lives of students due to
5 the long-standing tradition of promoting racial, ethnic, and
6 cultural diversity on its campus along with the aggressive
7 recruitment of diverse groups of students, NOW, THEREFORE,
8
9 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
10
11 That the Senate recognizes March 22, 2007, as "FSU Day"
12 in Tallahassee, in recognition of Florida State University's
13 contributions as an outstanding institution of higher
14 education.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,
16 with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr. T. K.
17 Wetherell, President of Florida State University, as a
18 tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
