1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing March 2007 as "Colon
3 Cancer Awareness Month" in the State of
4 Florida.

6 WHEREAS, colon cancer is one of the most prevalent, yet
7 in most cases, preventable cancers, and
8 WHEREAS, among cancer cases in the state of Florida,
9 colon cancer is the second most common cause of death among
10 adult men and women, and
11 WHEREAS, it is possible to have colon or rectal cancer,
12 yet not have any cancer symptoms, and
13 WHEREAS, it is estimated that 11,420 new cases of colon
14 cancer will be diagnosed among Floridians and 3,530 people
15 will die from the disease during the year 2007, and
16 WHEREAS, the risk for colon cancer increases with age,
17 with more than 90 percent of all colon and rectal cancers
18 being diagnosed in adults age 50 or older, and
19 WHEREAS, Floridians can significantly lower the number
20 of incidents of colon cancer and deaths from this disease by
21 complying with the colorectal cancer screening guidelines by
22 the American Cancer Society, and
23 WHEREAS, approximately 44 percent of Floridians age 50
24 and older report never having received a sigmoidoscopy or
25 colonoscopy exam, two of the screening exams recommended by
26 the American Cancer Society, and
27 WHEREAS, regular screenings may lower death rates by
28 detecting the disease at its earliest and most treatable
29 states and may also prevent some cancers through detection and
30 removal of polyps, and

1 WHEREAS, the Florida Division of the American Cancer
2 Society has engaged in a comprehensive, integrated approach to
3 significantly lessen the effect of colorectal cancer in
4 Florida through the launching of its "No Excuses Campaign to
5 Defeat Colon Cancer in Florida," which focuses primarily on
6 increasing public awareness, affecting physician behavior
7 through partnerships with health care organizations, and
8 advocating for insurance coverage, NOW, THEREFORE,
9
10 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
11
12 That the Florida Senate recognizes the month of March
13 2007 as "Colon Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida and urges
14 all men and women to understand the risks associated with
15 colon cancer, to take preventative steps to minimize those
16 risks, and to undergo early detection procedures in compliance
17 with colon cancer screening guidelines recommended by the
18 American Cancer Society.
