  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the Habitat for

  3         Humanity of Jacksonville, Florida, for its

  4         service to the City of Jacksonville.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, in the spirit of providing affordable housing,

  7  nine visionaries in the Jacksonville community incorporated

  8  Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, Florida, better known as

  9  HabiJax, in 1988, and

10         WHEREAS, HabiJax is a community development program

11  that involves local businesses, churches, and individuals who

12  invest in the improvement of their community in Duval County,

13  and its mission is to eliminate poverty and substandard

14  housing conditions by working in cooperation with God's people

15  in need, without regard to race or religion, to create a

16  better habitat in which to live and work, and

17         WHEREAS, since 1989, the inspiration and collaboration

18  of many concerned Jacksonville residents have enabled HabiJax

19  to build more than 1,400 homes which far surpasses any other

20  local provider of affordable housing and any Habitat for

21  Humanity affiliate in the country, and

22         WHEREAS, HabiJax has accomplished many milestones, such

23  as the completion of 100 homes in 1994, the completion of 200

24  homes in 2000 during a Jimmy Carter Work Project that

25  transformed a public housing site into the Fairway Oaks

26  Community of 85 single-family homes in only 17 days, the

27  celebration of the dedication of the 1,000th home in December

28  2002, and the building of 39 homes in honor of the City of

29  Jacksonville serving as host to Super Bowl XXXIX in February,

 1         WHEREAS, in June, 2006, HabiJax partnered with the

 2  Northeast Florida Builders Association and 22 local member

 3  builders to complete 30 homes in McNair Park Villas in 7 days

 4  in recognition of HabiJax's 30th anniversary, and

 5         WHEREAS, in 2006 approximately 22 companies and

 6  organizations have partnered with HabiJax to build homes in

 7  the Jacksonville community with EverBank Financial Corp and

 8  Stein Mart, Inc., leading the way in numbers of homes

 9  sponsored, and

10         WHEREAS, support from HabiJax sponsors has helped build

11  strong families, solid communities, and lasting partnerships

12  wherein families have moved out of inadequate housing and into

13  homes of their own which fosters a new sense of pride and

14  independence, and

15         WHEREAS, building on faith, HabiJax and its partners

16  will accomplish another milestone in 2007--the construction of

17  the 1,500th house, NOW, THEREFORE,

18  

19  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

20  

21         That Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, Florida, is

22  commended for its outstanding accomplishments and devotion to

23  its mission of providing affordable housing to those in need

24  and eliminating poverty and substandard housing in Duval

25  County for the past 19 years.
