1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution recognizing the anniversaries of
3 the Purple Heart and the Military Order of the
4 Purple Heart.

6 WHEREAS, the Purple Heart, established by General
7 George Washington 225 years ago on August 7, 1782, and
8 originally known as the Military Badge of Merit, is the oldest
9 military decoration in the world in present use, and
10 WHEREAS, the Purple Heart was adopted February 22,
11 1932, on the 200th anniversary of General George Washington's
12 birth as a combat decoration awarded exclusively to members of
13 the Armed Forces wounded by an instrument of war in the hands
14 of the enemy and awarded posthumously to the next of kin in
15 the names of members who were killed in action or those who
16 died of wounds received in action, and
17 WHEREAS, more than 1.5 million members of the Armed
18 Forces have been awarded the Purple Heart for their gallant
19 defense of our valued freedoms against the enemies of our
20 cherished Republic, and
21 WHEREAS, the organization known as the Military Order
22 of the Purple Heart was formed on October 19, 1932, for the
23 protection and mutual interest of members of the Armed Forces
24 who have received the Purple Heart, and
25 WHEREAS, the Military Order of the Purple Heart is the
26 only veterans organization comprised solely of combat veterans
27 and is the only veterans organization exclusively chartered by
28 Congress for combat-wounded veterans, NOW, THEREFORE,

1 That the Florida Senate recognizes 2007 as the 225th
2 anniversary of the Purple Heart and the 75th anniversary of
3 the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Florida Senate pays
5 tribute to all recipients of the Purple Heart for their
6 courageous sacrifices on the fields of battle and commends the
7 Military Order of the Purple Heart as a national organization
8 dedicated to preserving the proud legacy of the Purple Heart
9 and to assisting America's veterans through its participation
10 in the Department of Veterans Affairs National Service Officer
11 Program.
