  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution commending the University of

  3         Florida Gators Men's Basketball Team for

  4         winning the second NCAA Men's Basketball

  5         Championship in the university's history.

  6  

  7         WHEREAS, the University of Florida Gators have long

  8  been recognized for their tradition in all sports, and

  9         WHEREAS, the University of Florida Gators Men's

10  Basketball Team has continued this tradition of athletic

11  excellence, achieved and maintained through their hard work,

12  determination, unselfish play, and a team-first attitude, and

13         WHEREAS, the Florida Gators, four times the regular

14  season Southeastern Conference Basketball Champions and three

15  times the conference tournament champions, won their most

16  recent Southeastern Conference Championship in 2007 by

17  defeating the University of Arkansas on the way to their great

18  success in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, and

19         WHEREAS, the Florida Gators won their first NCAA Men's

20  Basketball Championship on April 3, 2006, and

21         WHEREAS, inspired by Coach Billy Donovan and his

22  coaching staff, Florida Gators Jack Berry, Corey Brewer,

23  Taurean Green, Walter Hodge, Al Horford, Lee Humphrey,

24  Jonathan Mitchell, Joakim Noah, Brandon Powell, Chris Richard,

25  Marreese Speights, Brett Swanson, Garrett Tyler, and Dan

26  Werner came together to form a championship team, and

27         WHEREAS, on April 2, 2007, the Florida Gators defeated

28  the Ohio State University Buckeyes by a score of 84-75 in

29  Atlanta, Georgia, in a game that showcased the team's combined

30  talent for playing balanced and selfless basketball, and

 1         WHEREAS, in this historic and record-making win, the

 2  Florida Gators won the second consecutive NCAA Division One

 3  Men's Basketball Championship for the University of Florida,

 4  NOW, THEREFORE,

 5  

 6  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

 7  

 8         That the Senate salutes the University of Florida Men's

 9  Basketball Team for winning the 2007 National Collegiate

10  Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship, the second

11  such championship in the history of the University of Florida.

12         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

13  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the

14  University of Florida, to Coach Billy Donovan, and to each

15  member of the Florida Gator Men's Basketball Team as a

16  tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
