1 Senate Resolution
2 A resolution commending New College of Florida
3 in Sarasota for ranking first among the
4 nation's public liberal arts baccalaureate
5 institutions in 2007 and producing one of the
6 highest percentages of Fulbright Scholars of
7 any liberal arts school in the nation.

9 WHEREAS, 6 years ago the Legislature designated New
10 College of Florida in Sarasota to serve a distinctive mission
11 as the free-standing public residential 4-year liberal arts
12 honors institution of this state, and
13 WHEREAS, New College of Florida has no football or
14 basketball teams to bring glory to this state as do its sister
15 institutions of higher learning, and
16 WHEREAS, New College of Florida attracts highly
17 motivated, academically talented students, and
18 WHEREAS, New College of Florida maintains a
19 student-faculty ratio of 11 to 1, offering its students close
20 interaction with a distinguished faculty, 95 percent of whom
21 are full-time teaching faculty and 97 percent of whom have
22 earned a doctorate or the terminal degree in their field, and
23 WHEREAS, to graduate from New College of Florida a
24 student must complete three month-long independent study
25 projects and a year-long senior thesis, defended before a
26 baccalaureate committee of three faculty members, and
27 WHEREAS, New College of Florida produced one of the
28 highest per capita percentages of Fulbright Scholars of any
29 liberal arts school in the nation as rated in the Chronicle of
30 Higher Education, and

1 WHEREAS, New College of Florida was ranked first among
2 the nation's public liberal arts baccalaureate institutions by
3 U.S. News and World Report in its America's Best Colleges,
4 2007 Edition, NOW, THEREFORE,

6 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:
7
8 That New College of Florida is commended for bringing
9 national academic recognition and prominence to the state's
10 institutions of higher education by being ranked as first
11 among the nation's public liberal arts baccalaureate
12 institutions by U.S. News and World Report in its America's
13 Best Colleges, 2007 Edition, and producing one of the highest
14 percentages of Fulbright Scholars of any liberal arts
15 baccalaureate school in the nation.
