  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution commemorating the 90th Anniversary

  3         of the Space Coast Chapter of the American Red

  4         Cross in Brevard County.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, the Space Coast Chapter of the American Red

  7  Cross is the primary organization in Brevard County

  8  specializing in Disaster Relief and has served Brevard County

  9  for 90 years, and

10         WHEREAS, the Space Coast Chapter exemplifies the

11  American Red Cross as a humanitarian organization led by

12  volunteers which provides relief to victims of disasters and

13  helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies,

14  and

15         WHEREAS, the Space Coast Chapter's 10 paid staff

16  members and more than 200 volunteers are guided by the

17  fundamental principles of the American Red Cross - Humanity,

18  Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service,

19  Unity, and Universality, and

20         WHEREAS, paid staff and volunteers from the Space Coast

21  Chapter of the American Red Cross provide Emergency messaging

22  to members of the military and their families through our

23  Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES) Department, and

24         WHEREAS, the Emergency Services Department has served

25  the county in times of all natural or man-made disasters,

26  including the many wildfires over the past 90 years, and

27         WHEREAS, during Hurricanes Charley, Frances, Jeanne,

28  and Ivan, the Chapter rendered assistance to more than 2,500

29  residents and distributed over $4 million to aid in the

30  recovery of Brevard County residents during the unprecedented

31  hurricane season of 2004, and

 1         WHEREAS, the Chapter has responded to more than 5,000

 2  single home fires in its remarkable history, and

 3         WHEREAS, the Chapter's Health and Safety Department has

 4  been the leader in community education and training in Brevard

 5  County throughout the Chapter's 90-year history, and training

 6  more than 450,000 individuals in first aid and CPR; 120,000

 7  adults and children in aquatics and water safety; 5,000

 8  residents in HIV/AIDS prevention; and 150,000 in

 9  mission-related caregiving for the elderly and other priority

10  groups, NOW, THEREFORE,

11  

12  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

13  

14         That this body does pause in its deliberations to

15  recognize the dedicated efforts and exemplary work of the

16  Space Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross, led by Janet

17  Weigold Bryant, in the Chapter's continued mission to serve

18  the residents of Brevard County in their time of need during

19  natural or man-made disasters.

20         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

21  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the Space

22  Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross as a token of the

23  sentiments of the Florida Senate.
