  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution expressing the condolences of the

  3         Florida Senate on the tragic events at Virginia

  4         Polytechnic Institute and State University.

  5  

  6         WHEREAS, on April 16, 2007, a student, Cho Seung-Hui,

  7  opened fire in a dormitory and classroom building on the

  8  Virginia Tech campus, killing 32 people before committing

  9  suicide, and

10         WHEREAS, Virginia Tech, the commonly used name for the

11  Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, is

12  located in Blacksburg, Virginia, was founded in 1872 as a

13  land-grant college, and now has more than 25,000 full-time

14  students attending eight colleges and graduate programs on its

15  2,600-acre campus, and

16         WHEREAS, even in the midst of this terrible tragedy,

17  the students and faculty of Virginia Tech have come together

18  and shown to the world the true spirit of their community,

19  which remains strong and enduring, NOW, THEREFORE,

20  

21  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

22  

23         That the Florida Senate offers its heartfelt

24  condolences to the victims and their families and friends, and

25  to the students, faculty, administrators, and staff members of

26  Virginia Tech who have also been deeply affected by the

27  horrific events.

28         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Florida Senate

29  recognizes that with the support of this great nation,

30  Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University will

31  continue to be a proud and exemplary institution.
