  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing October 2007 as

  3         "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most common cancer

  6  diagnosed in women in the United States, and

  7         WHEREAS, Florida ranks second in the nation for total

  8  number of breast cancer deaths and fourth in total number of

  9  new breast cancer cases, and

10         WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer and

11  the single most important risk factor is age, such that breast

12  cancers predominantly occur in women age 50 and older, and the

13  risk increases with age until age 80, and

14         WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that

15  11,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed

16  in Florida, and approximately 2,700 women will die of the

17  disease during the year 2007, and

18         WHEREAS, a woman living in Florida has a one in eight

19  chance of developing breast cancer, and

20         WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second most common cause

21  of cancer death in white, African American, Asian American,

22  American Indian, and Hispanic women living in the United

23  States, and

24         WHEREAS, early detection, through routine clinical

25  examinations and mammography screening beginning at age 40, in

26  compliance with the American Cancer Society's recommended

27  guidelines, are the key to detecting breast cancer at its

28  earliest stages, and

29         WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer, if

30  the disease is found in its earliest stages, is 98 percent,

 1  but drops down to 26 percent if the cancer is detected late,

 2  in a stage of metastases, and

 3         WHEREAS, in conjunction with the promotion of October

 4  as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer awareness

 5  programs, such as the American Cancer Society's Reach to

 6  Recovery Program, will promote the early detection of breast

 7  cancer through regular screening, NOW, THEREFORE,

 8  

 9  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

10  

11         That the month of October 2007 is recognized as "Breast

12  Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida and all women are urged to

13  understand the risks associated with breast cancer, to take

14  preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to undergo early

15  detection procedures, such as mammography, in compliance with

16  the American Cancer Society's recommended breast cancer

17  screening guidelines.
