1 A bill to be entitled
2 An act relating to nurse practitioners;
3 amending s. 893.02, F.S.; redefining the term
4 "practitioner" to include an advanced
5 registered nurse practitioner; authorizing an
6 advanced registered nurse practitioner to
7 prescribe certain controlled substances under
8 certain circumstances; providing an effective
9 date.

11 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13 Section 1. Subsection (19) of section 893.02, Florida
14 Statutes, is amended to read:
15 893.02 Definitions.--The following words and phrases
16 as used in this chapter shall have the following meanings,
17 unless the context otherwise requires:
18 (19) "Practitioner" means a physician licensed
19 pursuant to chapter 458, a dentist licensed pursuant to
20 chapter 466, a veterinarian licensed pursuant to chapter 474,
21 an osteopathic physician licensed pursuant to chapter 459, a
22 naturopath licensed pursuant to chapter 462, or a podiatric
23 physician licensed pursuant to chapter 461, or an advanced
24 registered nurse practitioner certified pursuant to s. 464.012
25 in accordance with the requirements of this paragraph,
26 provided such practitioner holds a valid federal controlled
27 substance registry number. An advanced registered nurse
28 practitioner certified pursuant to s. 464.012 may prescribe
29 substances listed in Schedule III, Schedule IV, or Schedule V
30 to the extent authorized by a protocol with a physician
31 licensed under chapter 458 or chapter 459. In addition to the

1 authority to prescribe controlled substances listed in
2 Schedule III, Schedule IV, or Schedule V, an advanced
3 registered nurse practitioner may prescribe or order
4 substances listed in Schedule II for a patient in a hospital
5 or hospice to the extent authorized by his or her protocol.
6 Section 2. This act shall take effect upon becoming a
7 law.

10 SENATE SUMMARY
11 Redefines the term "practitioner" to include an advanced
registered nurse practitioner. Authorizes an advanced
12 registered nurse practitioner to prescribe certain
controlled substances under certain circumstances.
