1 Senate Memorial
2 A memorial to the Congress of the United
3 States, urging Congress to support the Medicare
4 Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of
5 2007.

7 WHEREAS, prescription drug prices have risen between 14
8 and 19 percent during the past 4 years, which is five times
9 the rate of inflation, and
10 WHEREAS, the value of the prescription drug benefit
11 authorized under the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement,
12 and Modernization Act of 2003 will diminish each year if such
13 inflationary trend continues, and
14 WHEREAS, such federal act prohibits Medicare officials
15 from negotiating directly with pharmaceutical companies for
16 lower prices, and
17 WHEREAS, the United States Department of Defense, the
18 Veterans Health Administration, and the Indian Health Service
19 have achieved great savings through negotiation with
20 pharmaceutical companies, and
21 WHEREAS, negotiation and competition with respect to
22 prescription drug prices is in the best interest of Floridians
23 on Medicare, and
24 WHEREAS, the Medicare Prescription Drug Price
25 Negotiation Act of 2007 amends the previously passed Medicare
26 Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003
27 and will allow direct negotiation of prescription drug prices
28 with pharmaceutical companies, NOW, THEREFORE,

30 Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

1 That the Congress of the United States is urged to pass
2 the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2007.
3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
4 dispatched to the President of the United States, to the
5 President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the
6 United States House of Representatives, and to each member of
7 the Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
