3     Amendment (with title amendment)
4     Remove lines 15 and 16 and insert:
5commemorating January 6 as "Three Kings Day" and recognize that
6many residents of the state celebrate the occasion as a time to
7be with their family and friends, attend services, exchange
8gifts, and celebrate their cultural heritage.

11     Remove line 5 and insert:
12commemorating the occasion; providing an effective date.

14     WHEREAS, the Hispanic history of this state began in 1513
15when Ponce de Leon arrived in the land he called La Pascua
16Florida, and
17     WHEREAS, this Hispanic history of the state was
18strengthened when, in 1565, Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded San
19Augustin, or St. Augustine, the first permanent European
20settlement in what is now the United States, and
21     WHEREAS, Florida was a Spanish colony for almost 300 years,
22except for a 20-year period between 1763 and 1783, until the
23Adams-Onis Treaty ceded Florida to the United States in 1821,
24and
25     WHEREAS, Hispanic people have remained in Florida since it
26was a Spanish colony, and
27     WHEREAS, Hispanic food, traditions, and culture have
28contributed greatly to the state in the past, and
29     WHEREAS, the Hispanic population of Florida has grown
30substantially in recent history by immigration and, as a result,
31the Hispanic population continues to influence the food,
32traditions, and culture of Florida, and
33     WHEREAS, El Dia de los Reyes, or "Three Kings Day," is a
34day that has not only religious meaning for many Hispanics but
35is also a day that has deep cultural roots that encourage
36extended families and friends to visit each other and enjoy each
37other's company, to celebrate, and to exchange gifts, NOW,
38THEREFORE,
