  1                        Senate Resolution

  2         A resolution recognizing March 21, 2007, as

  3         "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee.

  4  

  5         WHEREAS, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

  6  (FAMU) was founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in

  7  1891, and designated a university in 1953, and

  8         WHEREAS, FAMU is a 4-year, historically black

  9  university offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral

10  programs, which seeks qualified students from all racial,

11  ethnic, religious, and national groups, and

12         WHEREAS, for more than 120 years FAMU has provided

13  immeasurable educational opportunities that have enhanced the

14  quality of life for young men and women, and

15         WHEREAS, in 2006, FAMU was named the No. 1 College for

16  African Americans by Black Enterprise, and today more

17  African-American students earn their bachelor's degrees at

18  FAMU than at any other American university, and

19         WHEREAS, the University encompasses 13 colleges and

20  schools and two institutes: Arts and Sciences; Education;

21  Engineering Sciences, Technology and Agriculture; Pharmacy and

22  Pharmaceutical Sciences; Engineering; Allied Health Sciences;

23  Architecture; Business and Industry; General Studies;

24  Journalism and Graphic Communication; Nursing; Law; Graduate

25  Studies and Research; Environmental Sciences Institute; and

26  the Institute of Public Health, and

27         WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African-American

28  Ph.D's in physics and the top producer of black pharmacists in

29  the nation, and

30         WHEREAS, the FAMU faculty has secured more than 300

31  active grants and contracts from federal, state, and private

 1  sources, representing research, community service, and

 2  scholarly projects, and

 3         WHEREAS, FAMU operates the only research center in

 4  Florida for the study of plasmas and plasma technology, and

 5         WHEREAS, in November 2006, FAMU captured its sixth

 6  consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball

 7  Championship title, and, in December 2006, FAMU High School

 8  won the 1B State Football Championship, and

 9         WHEREAS, on February 4, 2007, Florida A&M University's

10  Marching "100" band performed in Super Bowl XLI in Miami

11  Florida, NOW, THEREFORE,

13  Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

14  

15         That the Florida Senate recognizes March 21, 2007, as

16  "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee, in recognition of Florida

17  Agricultural and Mechanical University's contributions as an

18  outstanding institution of higher education.

19         BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution,

20  with the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr.

21  Castell Vaughn Bryant, Interim President of Florida

22  Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible token of

23  the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
