| 5 | WHEREAS, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse has played a |
| 6 | significant economic and historical role in the settlement and |
| 7 | development of South Florida and its counties for 100 years, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse has stood through |
| 9 | fierce hurricanes, protecting coastal shipping and guiding |
| 10 | mariners past dangerous reefs before the advent of SONAR, LORAN, |
| 11 | and GPS technologies, and |
| 12 | WHEREAS, the lighthouse is a tourist attraction where |
| 13 | thousands of curious visitors, divers, fishermen, and yachtsmen |
| 14 | come to photograph and explore the inlet, ocean, and reefs each |
| 15 | year, and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, the lantern of the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, |
| 17 | known as the "Big Diamond," was first lit by the United States |
| 18 | Lighthouse Establishment on March 7, 1907, and shines farther |
| 19 | out to sea than any other lighthouse lantern in the world |
| 20 | through its 9-foot Fresnel lens, and |
| 21 | WHEREAS, by being chosen to represent the 30 existing |
| 22 | lighthouses of Florida on the 37-cent postage stamp produced in |
| 23 | 2003, the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse was recognized as a symbol |
| 24 | of the romantic spirit and sense of adventure characteristic of |
| 25 | many Floridians, and |
| 26 | WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the state to |
| 27 | preserve, protect, and promote this 100-year-old treasure of our |
| 28 | seashore, the historic Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, NOW, |
| 29 | THEREFORE, |

| 34 | That the House of Representatives designates March 7, 2007, |
| 35 | as "Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse Centennial Day". |
