2A resolution recognizing February 2007 as Black History
3Month.

5     WHEREAS, the history of African Americans in the United
6States has been a unique and difficult proving ground for the
7ideals upon which this country was founded, and
8     WHEREAS, the struggle of African Americans to secure
9freedom and equality of opportunity has been conducted against
10many other Americans who originally came to this country to
11secure those same rights, which rights represent the promise of
12America, and
13     WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the many achievements
14of African Americans in the United States to offer all
15Americans, through the exploration of that particular heritage,
16a broader, enriching perspective that reveals the amazing
17diversity of contributors to the forming and shaping of the
18nation, and
19WHEREAS, the State of Florida is uniquely blessed because
20it is the home of such excellent museums as the Black Archives
21Research Center and Museum at Florida Agricultural and
22Mechanical University, the Florida Museum of Natural History at
23the University of Florida, and the Black Heritage Museum in
24Miami and is also the site of such renowned research as the
25Black Abolitionist Papers Project at Florida State University,
26and
27WHEREAS, it is especially fitting to recognize the many
28achievements of Floridians such as Zora Neale Hurston, Charles
29Kenzie Steele, Sr., Jesse J. McCrary, Jr., Joseph E. Lee, and
30Mary McLeod Bethune, and
31WHEREAS, the month of February, the birth month of both
32Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, key leaders in the
33abolishment of slavery, is particularly suited for the
34commemoration of this history, NOW, THEREFORE,

36Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
37Florida:

39     That the month of February 2007 is hereby recognized as
40Black History Month for the purpose of creating awareness among
41Florida's citizens of the rich and unique history and
42contributions of African Americans.
