House Resolution
2A resolution acknowledging the invaluable contributions of
3Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and recognizing
4March 18-20, 2007, as "The 13th Annual Delta Days at the
5Florida Capitol."

7     WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a
8public service organization founded on January 13, 1913, by 22
9outstanding women at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and
10     WHEREAS, nearly 6 weeks after its founding, the first
11public act of the sorority was its participation in the Women's
12Suffrage March which demanded voting rights for women in
13America, and
14     WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is a
15sisterhood of college-educated women committed to implementing
16the sorority's mission through its Five-Point Programmatic
17Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development,
18International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental
19Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement, and
20     WHEREAS, on January 13, 2007, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
21Incorporated, celebrated 94 years of exemplary service and
22support to local communities, leading dialogue on public policy
23issues, supporting quality education, and producing new projects
24to stimulate current and future economic growth, and
25     WHEREAS, the membership of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
26Incorporated, consists of more than 200,000 college-educated
27women nationally and 950 chapters worldwide, including 47
28chapters located in Florida and the Bahamas, the women of which
29are focused and visible as corporate and civic leaders,
30productive public officials, acclaimed academicians, and
31activists in their own right, and
32     WHEREAS, the Beta Alpha, Kappa Epsilon, Tallahassee
33Alumnae, and Gadsden County Alumnae Chapters initiated an annual
34opportunity for Deltas to meet with Florida Legislators to voice
35issues of concern, and hosted the 1st Annual Delta Days at the
36Florida Capitol in March of 1995, and
37     WHEREAS, for the past 12 years, the sorority's Florida
38chapters have conducted "Delta Days at the Florida Capitol" to
39provide information to state legislators and government
40executives, assisting in developing public policy; hosting a
41reception for state legislators and government executives; and
42monitoring the progress of pending legislation related to
43significant public policy issues, and
44     WHEREAS, Desinda "Dee" Wood-Carper, 2007 D.D.A.C
45Chairwoman, and Yolanda Cash Jackson and Sha'ron James, 2007
46D.D.A.C Co-Chairs, under the leadership of Heddie M. Sumpter,
47Regional Social Action Coordinator, will introduce the Inaugural
48Honorable Carrie P. Meek Servant Leadership Luncheon: "A Tribute
49to Deltas in Public Service," recognizing the contributions that
50members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, have made
51locally, regionally, and nationally in the State of Florida, and
52     WHEREAS, on March 18-20, 2007, the members of the 47
53chapters of the sorority that now serve within Florida and the
54Bahamas will meet in Tallahassee to conduct The 13th Annual
55Delta Days at the Florida Capitol, focusing on a theme of
56"Leadership, Advocacy, and Empowerment" to take social action
57and deliver public services, and
58     WHEREAS, Senators Larcenia J. Bullard and Arthenia L.
59Joyner and Representatives Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Audrey
60Gibson, and Joyce Cusack are esteemed members of Delta Sigma
61Theta Sorority, Incorporated, NOW, THEREFORE,

63Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
64Florida:

66     That Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is commended
67for its contributions to the people of Florida, and March 18-20,
682007, is recognized as "The 13th Annual Delta Days at the
69Florida Capitol."
