House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the week of June 17-23, 2007, as
3"Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, humane societies have diligently served numerous
6communities in the state for as many as 45 years, working to
7promote animal adoption and education, eliminate animal
8overpopulation, prevent animal cruelty, and relieve animal
9suffering, and
10     WHEREAS, stray animals present health and safety risks for
11the people and animals of the state, including the spread of
12rabies and other contagious diseases, and
13     WHEREAS, it is estimated that more than 800,000 unwanted or
14stray animals are euthanized annually in Florida, and
15     WHEREAS, through education, adoption, and promotion of
16spay/neuter practices, humane societies are reducing the number
17of companion animals euthanized in this state, and
18     WHEREAS, in 2006, humane societies located permanent homes
19for many thousands of unwanted animals and promoted regional
20spay/neuter campaigns as a preventive and responsible measure
21for controlling the animal overpopulation in Florida, and
22     WHEREAS, humane societies are staffed by an estimated
2310,000 Florida residents who unselfishly volunteer their time,
24energy, and expertise, NOW, THEREFORE,

26Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
27Florida:

29     That the humane societies across this state are commended
30for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the people and
31animals of Florida.
32     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the week of June 17-23, 2007,
33is recognized as "Humane Society Appreciation Week."
