House Resolution
2A resolution in memory of former Representative William
3Caleb Grimes.

5     WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes was born on October 17, 1918,
6in Palmetto, Florida, son of the late Jessie Sims Grimes and
7Edward Glenn Grimes, and
8     WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes graduated from Palmetto High
9School in 1935 and received his undergraduate degree in Business
10Administration from the University of Florida, an LLB degree
11from the University of Florida College of Law in 1941, and a
12Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University in
131945, and
14     WHEREAS, called to active duty in 1941, William Caleb
15Grimes bravely served his country in the United States Army
16during World War II, reaching the rank of Major, and
17     WHEREAS, while completing his military service at Fort
18Devens, Massachusetts, William Caleb Grimes met Janet Craig
19Brouillette, whom he married in August of 1947, and
20     WHEREAS, following his military service, William Caleb
21Grimes joined his father's law practice and was a senior member
22of Grimes Goebel Grimes Hawkins Gladfelter and Galvano, PL,
23until his retirement in 2006, and
24     WHEREAS, in addition to his noted legal career, which
25included service as attorney for the City of Palmetto, William
26Caleb Grimes served two terms as a member of the Florida House
27of Representatives from 1954 to 1958, during which he supported
28such important legislation as the "Bulkhead Act," which ended
29indiscriminate dredging and filling of bays and other waters,
30the creation of the Florida Community College System, and the
31creation and preservation of Coquina Beach and Leffis Key on
32Anna Maria Island as public beaches, and
33     WHEREAS, during his lifetime, William Caleb Grimes was
34active in civic, charitable, and professional organizations,
35receiving numerous awards and honors, including Manatee County's
36Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1974, and for his service
37on the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar from 1974 to 1979
38and other legal work, was named among the Manatee County Bar
39Association's Legends of the Bar in 2006, and
40     WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes was an active supporter of
41the Palmetto Boys Club, volunteering as a youth baseball coach
42for many years and serving as a director, and
43     WHEREAS, William Caleb Grimes passed away on Tuesday,
44February 13, 2007, and is survived by his wife of 59 years,
45Janet; his son, Caleb; his daughter, Elizabeth; and six
46grandchildren, and is mourned by a grateful community and state,
47NOW, THEREFORE,

49Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
50Florida:

52     That William Caleb Grimes is remembered and honored for his
53many accomplishments and exemplary service to his community,
54state, nation, family, and friends.
55     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
56forwarded to the family of William Caleb Grimes as a tangible
57token of the sentiments expressed herein.
