House Resolution
2A resolution designating April 10, 2007, as "University of
3South Florida Day" in Tallahassee.

5     WHEREAS, the University of South Florida has more than
6200,000 alumni living in all 50 states and 80,000 graduates
7living in the Tampa Bay area and serves its community in the
8areas of health, business, and the arts, particularly through
9social programs that seek to make the Tampa Bay area a safe and
10viable place to live, and
11     WHEREAS, the University of South Florida has a $3.2 billion
12annual economic impact on the Tampa Bay area and has been
13classified in the top tier of research universities by the
14Carnegie Foundation, and
15     WHEREAS, the University of South Florida invests its
16resources in ways that mutually benefit the university and the
17community through collaborative interactions and related
18scholarships, which has produced more than 600,000 volunteer
19hours from students, faculty, and staff and more than $22
20million in pro bono health care and distinguished the university
21as the only Florida institution to have received the Carnegie
22Foundation classification for Community Engagement in Outreach
23and Partnerships, and
24     WHEREAS, the University of South Florida submitted a
25winning proposal to the Florida Technology, Research, and
26Scholarship Board, which awarded the university $8 million to
27create the Florida Center of Excellence for Biomolecular
28Identification and Targeted Therapeutics, a true
29community/business partnership that will change how illnesses
30and diseases are detected and treated, and
31     WHEREAS, the USF Bulls are members of the Big East Athletic
32Conference, are the only Division 1-A team serving the sports-
33loving Tampa Bay area, and are especially proud of sponsoring
34diverse and nationally competitive programs that focus on
35academics and the health, fitness, and emotional development of
36their scholar athletes while providing affordable family
37entertainment for the community at large and enhancing the Bay
38Area's status as a model center of sports as economic
39development, NOW, THEREFORE,

41Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
42Florida:

44     That the University of South Florida is recognized for its
45excellence as an institution of higher learning and for its
46exemplary service to its students and the wider community and
47designates April 10, 2007, as "University of South Florida Day"
48in Tallahassee.
49     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
50presented to Dr. Judy Genshaft, President of the University of
51South Florida, as a tangible token of the sentiments expressed
52herein.
