House Resolution
2A resolution commending New College of Florida for
3achieving national prominence among institutions of higher
4learning.

6     WHEREAS, founded in 1960 as a private college for
7academically talented students, New College of Florida became a
8public college in 1975 through a merger with the State
9University System and was established in law on July 1, 2001, to
10serve its distinctive mission as the 4-year residential liberal
11arts and sciences honors college of the State of Florida,
12attracting highly motivated and academically talented students
13across the state and nationwide, and
14     WHEREAS, in order to graduate, each New College of Florida
15student must complete three independent study projects, write a
16senior thesis in his or her discipline, and defend his or her
17thesis before a baccalaureate committee of at least three
18faculty members, and
19     WHEREAS, New College of Florida was named the best public
20liberal arts college in the United States by U.S. News & World
21Report, America's Best Colleges, 2007, and
22     WHEREAS, New College of Florida has produced one of the
23highest per capita percentages of Fulbright Scholars in the
24country, NOW, THEREFORE,

26Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
27Florida:

29     That New College of Florida is commended for its
30contribution in bringing national recognition and prominence to
31the state's institutions of higher learning.
