| 3 | achieving national prominence among institutions of higher |

| 6 | WHEREAS, founded in 1960 as a private college for |
| 7 | academically talented students, New College of Florida became a |
| 8 | public college in 1975 through a merger with the State |
| 9 | University System and was established in law on July 1, 2001, to |
| 10 | serve its distinctive mission as the 4-year residential liberal |
| 11 | arts and sciences honors college of the State of Florida, |
| 12 | attracting highly motivated and academically talented students |
| 13 | across the state and nationwide, and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, in order to graduate, each New College of Florida |
| 15 | student must complete three independent study projects, write a |
| 16 | senior thesis in his or her discipline, and defend his or her |
| 17 | thesis before a baccalaureate committee of at least three |
| 18 | faculty members, and |
| 19 | WHEREAS, New College of Florida was named the best public |
| 20 | liberal arts college in the United States by U.S. News & World |
| 21 | Report, America's Best Colleges, 2007, and |
| 22 | WHEREAS, New College of Florida has produced one of the |
| 23 | highest per capita percentages of Fulbright Scholars in the |
| 24 | country, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 27 | Florida: |

| 29 | That New College of Florida is commended for its |
| 30 | contribution in bringing national recognition and prominence to |
| 31 | the state's institutions of higher learning. |
