House Resolution
2A resolution designating May 2007 as "Stroke Awareness
3Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, strokes are the third leading cause of death among
6adults in the United States, causing more than 150,000 deaths
7annually, and is a leading cause of serious long-term
8disability, and
9     WHEREAS, strokes kill more women in the United States every
10year than breast cancer, and the death rate caused by strokes is
11greater among African Americans and senior citizens than it is
12among other Americans, and
13     WHEREAS, many Americans are unaware of the risk factors of
14strokes and have no knowledge of the symptoms of an impending
15stroke, and
16     WHEREAS, warning signs include sudden numbness or weakening
17of muscles in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of
18the body; sudden confusion, impairment of speech, or
19incomprehension; sudden impairment of vision; sudden inability
20to walk, coordinate motor functions, or maintain balance;
21dizziness; and sudden severe headaches without any apparent
22cause, and
23     WHEREAS, new and effective ways of treating strokes have
24been developed to diminish the impairment of victims, but much
25more research is needed to advance the discovery of improved
26medical care to reduce the risk of stroke and its damaging
27effects, and
28     WHEREAS, in conjunction with the promotion of May as
29"Stroke Awareness Month," stroke awareness programs such as
30"Young People and Stroke" and the "Igniting the Power" program
31will increase public awareness and empower those at high risk of
32having a stroke, NOW, THEREFORE,

34Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
35Florida:

37     That the House of Representatives designates May 2007 as
38"Stroke Awareness Month" in Florida and urges all Floridians to
39understand the symptoms and risk factors associated with strokes
40and to take preventive steps toward minimizing those risks.
