5 | WHEREAS, strokes are the third leading cause of death among |
6 | adults in the United States, causing more than 150,000 deaths |
7 | annually, and is a leading cause of serious long-term |
8 | disability, and |
9 | WHEREAS, strokes kill more women in the United States every |
10 | year than breast cancer, and the death rate caused by strokes is |
11 | greater among African Americans and senior citizens than it is |
12 | among other Americans, and |
13 | WHEREAS, many Americans are unaware of the risk factors of |
14 | strokes and have no knowledge of the symptoms of an impending |
15 | stroke, and |
16 | WHEREAS, warning signs include sudden numbness or weakening |
17 | of muscles in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of |
18 | the body; sudden confusion, impairment of speech, or |
19 | incomprehension; sudden impairment of vision; sudden inability |
20 | to walk, coordinate motor functions, or maintain balance; |
21 | dizziness; and sudden severe headaches without any apparent |
22 | cause, and |
23 | WHEREAS, new and effective ways of treating strokes have |
24 | been developed to diminish the impairment of victims, but much |
25 | more research is needed to advance the discovery of improved |
26 | medical care to reduce the risk of stroke and its damaging |
27 | effects, and |
28 | WHEREAS, in conjunction with the promotion of May as |
29 | "Stroke Awareness Month," stroke awareness programs such as |
30 | "Young People and Stroke" and the "Igniting the Power" program |
31 | will increase public awareness and empower those at high risk of |
32 | having a stroke, NOW, THEREFORE, |

34 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
35 | Florida: |

37 | That the House of Representatives designates May 2007 as |
38 | "Stroke Awareness Month" in Florida and urges all Floridians to |
39 | understand the symptoms and risk factors associated with strokes |
40 | and to take preventive steps toward minimizing those risks. |
